The early years (0–5) are critical for brain development — 90% of a child’s brain is reportedly formed by age five. This is when the foundation for language and literacy is built. Children who develop strong pre-literacy skills during this time are better prepared to learn and thrive in school, especially when it comes to learning to read.
Yet not all children start school with the same access to books or early learning opportunities. That’s why we work to reduce barriers to literacy across Canada.
By focusing on ages 0–5, we aim to level the playing field and give every child an equitable start.
